Cosmetic Dentistry » Closing the Gap / Diastema Closure

Many adults are unhappy with their smile because of gaps between their front teeth. The technical name for this condition is diastemas, and they can be caused by bone loss, a receding gum line, by movement of the teeth or occur naturally. You may also not have had the opportunity to realign gappy teeth as a child or young adult, or you may have lost a tooth due to decay, injury or accident.

Whatever the cause, gappy teeth can make you embarrassed to show your smile, hiding it behind your hand and making you feel generally unhappy about your appearance. They can also cause problems when pieces of food get trapped in the gaps and are difficult to remove. This can lead to a build-up of plaque, which if untreated can cause tooth decay and, ultimately, tooth loss.

Principal Dentist Nick Tomes is highly experienced in providing solutions for gappy teeth, without the need for braces and lengthy Orthodontic treatments. We offer several options for patients unhappy with the gaps between their front teeth:

Building up teeth

Using a special Composite Bonding technique, which utilises a composite material closely matched to the natural shade of your teeth, your teeth are built up. This composite material is shaped and polished, and will provide a strong surface that feels very natural and should last for many years.

Veneers

In less common cases Veneers or Crowns can be used to close the gaps. Veneers are thin slivers of porcelain that are fitted over your natural teeth to cover any gaps – they're a similar concept to false fingernails. Your Dentist will take an impression of your teeth to ensure your Veneers fit properly, and when they are ready they are fitted to your teeth with a strong bonding material. Your dentist will choose a shade of veneer that closely matches your natural tooth colour.

Dental Implants

If you have a missing tooth or teeth, Dental Implants can be the perfect solution. An Implant is a titanium post which is placed in to the jaw bone and acts like the root of a natural tooth. A Crown that looks, and acts, very much like a natural tooth is then placed on top. This procedure is carried out over a number of stages from initial consultation through to final placement.

Our Principal Dentist, Nick Tomes, is highly experienced in fitting Dental Implants and our practice has been fitting Implants for more than 12 years. Nick has a great interest, supported by in depth, post-graduate training, in Dental Implantology.

Implants could be the right solution for you if you have:

  • Commitment to maintain a good oral health regime.
